Gudrun Sibbons is a German-born British artist best known for her bucolic landscape paintings. Her works are largely inspired by the atmospheric style of 17th-century Dutch artists like Jacob van Ruisdael, and regularly features epic expanses of sky and sun-dappled clouds. Employing a detailed and realist style, she often includes farmers or fisherman in period dress in her work to give a sense of historical context, such as the peasant family in the oil painting Watering the shire horses.
Born in 1925 in Annaberg, Germany, Sibbons fled Germany during World War II to England, where she started painting in her free time. Today, the artist’s work is in many private collections throughout the United Kingdom, including the actor Errol Flynn. She lives and works in the United Kingdom.
